He was born on December 27,1980 in Jackson, Mississippi. He stands six feet and six inches tall and weighs 300 pounds. Described as a physical, versatile young DL who is emerging as one of the best young linemen in the NFL.

He played one year of high school football at Provine High in Jackson, Mississippi. Two-way standout, playing both Tight End and Defensive End. He was selected to play in the Mississippi/Alabama High School all-star game following his senior season. He made 102 total tackles, including 11 sacks during his only full season playing football at the prep level.

He played in 22 games for Mississippi State, earning 16 starts along the defensive line following his transfer from junior college. He made 82 tackles while at MSU, including 15 for loss, two of which were sacks.

He made a switch from Defensive Tackle to Defensive End. He started nine of the 11 games in which he played during his junior campaign and totaled 32 tackles on the year, including seven for loss, one of which was a sack. Caused one fumble. And made one tackle at Memphis in the Bulldogs 29-17 victory at the Liberty Bowl. He had five tackles, including one for loss in State's Week 8 game vs. Kentucky.

He played in all 11 games with seven starting assignments to his credit during his sophomore campaign. He totaled 50 tackles on the year, including eight for loss, one of which was a sack. He played one year at Hinds (Mississippi) Community College and earned a major degree on Interdisciplinary Studies.

In 2004, he played in 10 games, starting three at Defensive Tackle and registered four sacks for 35 yards in losses to lead the team in both categories.
