Jake was born on January 2, 1980 in Johnson City, Tennessee. He stands 6 feet and 4 inches tall and weighs 300 lbs. Described as aggressive, versatile young lineman capable of playing G or C. Has played in 19 league games during his first two seasons, starting 16. Currntly he plays left guard for the Oakland Raiders in the NFL.

Jake attended Virginia Tech as a senior and he was one of the three players to earn unanimous All-American honors, joining Jim Pyne and linebacker Corey Moore. He started all 14 games at C as a senior and graded out at over 90 percent.He was Virginia Tech's strongest player with nearly 500-pound bench press. He also has the ability to handle long snap.

He made 565 snaps while starting 10 games at right guard as junior in 2002. He played the last eight games of the 2001 season, including the Gator Bowl, with a broken hand. He still managed to lead the team in knockdown blocks with 48.

He played in all 11 games in 2001, averaging 51 offensive snaps per game. He had 48 knockdown blocks. And recorded 10 knockdowns on 37 snaps in the opener against UConn. He graded out at 86 percent with four knockdowns at Rutgers and switched back to center during the spring.

He earned the prestigious George Preas Award as the most valuable offensive performer during the spring. In 2000, he played as a redshirt freshman in every game. He also played against Clemson in the Gator Bowl. He moved from center to guard during the spring and finished spring workouts as the starter at right guard. He took up Residential Property Management major at College Virginia Tech.
